OK, it wasn't the Border Patrol, it was the INS.

Actually, the guy was sent to Jordan. His family and the Canadian
officials weren't informed of his deportation, and he wasn't sent to
his home country, Canada, but rather to the country he fled in the
80s, Syria, through a country he has no history with, namely Jordan.

Americans who went to Canada during the Viet Nam conflict were given
blanket amnesty.

Anyways, Syria's on the State Department list of 7 countries
supporting terrorism. Shouldn't the USA be giving the guy a medal for
avoiding military service there?
