It used to mean something which was grounbreaking, useful, and was
only written by people who had names which would be recognised at
first glance as being an author who just _had_ to be read, in a
technical type of way.  

Now that they have become marketing flak, whitepapers are now down
there with mailing list archives for their accuracy.
