Hmm. I suppose if I type M-:, you could say I'm entering ``expression
evaluation mode'', except that what's really happening is that Emacs
is just readin an expression from the minibuffer; I could switch to
another buffer, edit some and switch back to the minibuffer to
evaluate whatever expression I had intended to.
vi is a better example. There are two primary modes: text entry and
command. If I hit i or a, for exampple, I am now in text edit mode,
and I cannot save the file or read a new file. To do that, I have to
hit ESC and enter command mode.
