poetry and prose written in the language.
Erasmian pronunciation of Greek, for example, was rather
logically extracted from a large body of work. Unfortunately, it's
likely to have been only used in a very small segment of the
Greek-speaking world at the time.
As much as I dog on Erasmian pronunciation (I grew up around
folks who spoke modern demotic Greek), it was derived using some
fairly well-understood methods.
