If you can have three states, they can be "dot", "dash", "pause" (and
then you may want a fourth state for "pause between words").
Some people like ASCII much better than Morse Code because it has more
redundancy but can be transmitted over a channel which is only capable
of sending binary messages in series.
This is supposed to show that computer people are both wasteful and
lazy.
