Subject: Re: [Am-info] Does Darwin open the door to Intel?
Motorola developed a faster processor, the G4, and committed itself to
ship Apple the chips in speeds of 450, 500 and 550 MHZ to an extent that
Apple could reliably market computers at those speeds. It took Mot months
to get enough higher speed chips, causing Apple some embarassment and bad
blood between itself and persons who ordered the high end machines. IBM
can also produce PowerPC chips, having developed most of the technology,
but IBM's contract with Motorola prevents it from selling them to Apple.
Motorola hasn't exactly gone out of its way to provide more chips or
allow IBM to provide them either, which is why Apple may now be looking
towards the Athlon and Pentium or possibly the Carusoe to power its
machines, or at least to run its software.

"Even as a longtime critic of the company, I must admit that
Microsoft occasionally flirts with the truth. Well, perhaps 'flirt'
is too strong a word. Let's just say Microsoft sometimes honks and
waves as it drives by her house."
